Thursday, December 5th

Well guess what -- there is history here! Pretty big history too!  This is where the Wright Brothers' First Flight was in December, 1903.  We saw the hill they tried their glider on a few times, but they knew to be legitimate they had to take off from flat land.  So they did.  The first flight went 120 feet for 12 seconds, 2nd flight went 175 feet for 12 seconds, 3rd flight went 200 feet for 15 seconds and their 4th one of the day went 852 feet for 59 seconds!  (The big rock in the picture in back of Jeff is where they took off from!!)  They had made history!

We are on a part of North Carolina called The Outer Banks.  Something I've never heard of.  There are long, skinny islands all along the east side of NC.  Atlantic Ocean on one side, large bay on the other.  Pretty awesome.  So this where the Wright Brothers chose to try their airplane because of soft landings (sand), wind, and isolation (some people thought they were crazy trying to fly, so they went far far away.)

Other than the Wright Brothers Museum and Monument,  we spent time on the beach......now for our Colorado friends, it's way warmer than you are there, but it's not like Hawaii or anything.  I still had on 3 layers, but everyone else was in shorts and running around looking for shells (getting frozen feet.)  I just relaxed listening to the waves.  Sitting in the camper, it sounds like the wind, but we feel nothing.  It's the waves crashing the shore.
